Condensed from the "Book of Remembrance" is the story of Maude and Blanche being invited to travel with Mrs. Farrar and family to visit her son, Theodore in Shannon County. A supply wagon and a passenger wagon were needed as the distance required many days and nights, necessitating preparation of all meals. One evening Maude went to a cornfield and came out with her arms full of roasting ears only to be accosted by two men. They recognized her, but for fun demanded money, making her tremble with fear. They 'let her off' and only weeks later did she learn that her tears were for nothing.

"William Alexander Fletcher was born September 16, 1843 in Madison County, Missouri, the only child of Alexander and Nancy Ann (Tallman) Fletcher. William was educated in the public schools of this county and attended the old Methodist College in Arcadia. In September 1864 he enlisted in Co. E, 47 Mo Infantry for Civil War service. He was in the battle of Pilot Knob, Mo, and a few skirmishes afterward which ended with about seven months' service.

"Several years later, February 16, 1875 to be exact, was the wedding date of William and Miss Sada Frances Ringo, daughter of Joseph and Fredonia A. (McGregor) Ringo. Sada was born in Hickman County, Kentucky, on August 15, 1855. Eight children were born of this union: Anna Maude (Mrs. R.E. Wilkinson); Adelia Blanche (Mrs. B. W. Sawyer); Alexander Ringo; Alma Olivia; Salena Mabel (Mrs. H. T. Cheaney); William Dixon; Douglas Edgar; Florence Fredonia.

" Bill spent his entire adulthood engaged in farming and at times, manufacturing tobacco. In 1880, he was elected Sheriff of Iron County; in 1882 was elected Sheriff and Collector (he gave up the former); in 1884 re-elected County Collector and in 1886 won the County Clerk position.

"In 1900 he retired fro twenty years of public service to engage in dairying and farming and to continue his active membership in the Masonic Fraternity.

"On Wednesday afternoon, February 16, 1910, their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary, between three and four p.m., while in the barber shop located in Miller Engineering office building, he collapsed, stricken with the paralysis. Friends carried him to his home across the street. Drs. Gay and Marshall were called and did all they could for him, aware of his shock suffered from a fall the previous autumn. He lingered until sometime between seven-thrity and eight o'clock that evening and expired."

Notes for Sada Francis Ringo:

The following is an account of Sada Frances Ringo:

"Sada Frances Ringo was born in Hickman County, Kentucky on August 13, 1855 to Joseph M. and Fredonia A. Ringo. The family moved to Wolf Island, Missouri during 1856 and remained for a tenure of fourteen years, moving to Arcadia, Missouri in April 1870. Found in the cornerstone of the newly erected (1870) four story brick building for Arcadia College (Methodist) is a list of students. Noted from Arcadia are Sarah F. (Sada Frances), Douglas McGregor and Nannie M. (Mack) Ringo thereby fulfilling their parent's desire for a good education for the children.

"On February 16, 1975 Sada married William Alexander Fletcher. One place of residence during the early years was on South Shepherd in Ironton neighboring the Emerson Place. Lena, their fifth child, recalled the admonitions of her Mother as she was leaving for the third grade classroom, 'Now children, remember to walk to Arcadia to the new house after school this evening.'

"Sada had the ability to take a proper mental attitude toward what came into her experience; possessed dynamic energy; and her impulse was the eternal how to do things--yesterday gone, tomorrow not existing.

"Her maternal instinct went beyond the large family to serving food to the hungry, nursing the sick, laying out the dead at neighbors and had a practical, generous attitude to all good causes. Her mental alertness and keen interest never abated, especially with the civic pride and desired improvements in her old home town, Arcadia. Her last few years were lived with her daughters in St. Louis, Missouri, but with eager anticipation for summer sojourns at the family homestead in Arcadia Valley.

"Home was the three story brick house erected during 1891, designed and built by Louis R. Miller, Sr., brother-in-law of Sada. According to the bill yet in hand, dated December 29, 1891, the total cost was $2,931.52 and the structure stands today in 1994. Its present owner, her great-grandson Philip H. Cheaney, occupies the premises with his wife and five children.

"Fifty-six years ago, she united with the Ironton Baptist Church of which she remained a consistent member. She was annually elected president of the Ladies' Aid Society for twenty-five years. An acknowledged leader, yet, she served as a servant without thought of leadership, worked in the business with her faithful aides.

"She died in St. Louis, Missouri on January 26, 1934. Her funeral was conducted the following day at the residence of her son, Douglas Edgar Fletcher, with interment in the Arcadia Valley Masonic Cemetery. Former pastor of the Ironton Baptist Church, Rev. J. B. Cash, conducted the funeral rites, with six grandsons serving as pall bearers."

Notes for Alexander Fletcher:

The following is an partial account of Alexaner Fletcher:

"At age fourteen Alexander enlisted in the war against the Indians. Later he served in the War of 1812-14. After the war, he settled in Madison County, Missouri, in what was known as the Creek Nation. He was one of the first grand jurors called in that county on July 12, 1819. While living in Madison County Alexander married Nancy Ann Tallman; the exact date is unknown. To this union one child, William Alexander, was born on September 16, 1843. In 1850, when william alexander was seven years old, his father bought a farm from Cabel Berry lying west of Stouts Creek to which he removed his family. This land remained in the hands of a Fletcher family member for years, the last parcels being sold to the Arcadia Valley School District in 1993. Alexander Fletcher died December 12, 1864.

Notes for Nancy Ann Tallman:

The following is an account of Nancy Ann Tallman:

"Nancy Ann Tallman was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1800 and died in 1975. she came out to Missouri with Rev. J.C. Berryman and friends This J.C. Berryman founded Arcadia, Missouri High School under the Southern Methodist Conference in 1849. This school became Arcadia College (Ursuline Academy) in 1878, operated by the Ursuline Nuns.

"Records of Nancy Ann are incomplete. She was accustomed to some means as heirlooms in the william alexander Fletcher family attest. Flat silver, a high Spanish tortoise shell comb, a silk and wool shawl and old daguerreotypes framed in velvet and encased in carved frames which locked were treasured by family members.

"Stories were handed down that Nancy Ann would often sit and cry because there were no slaves in her new home to do work in which she had had no training. Her silk stockings and linen underwear soon gave way to sturdier clothing.

"The exact date of Nancy Ann's marriage to Alexander is not known. In 1860 the plans for building the Fort Hill Methodist Church in Arcadia were put into action. 'Among those who first signed for work were the leaders of the Church, including A. and Nancy Fletcher subscribing $100.00.' They were the first interred in the burial plot of Alexander Fletcher in the Arcadia Valley."

The fact that Joseph was for four years one of the judges of the County Court and the treasurer for another four years shows the high esteem in which he was held by his fellow citizens. He suffered for many years from rheumatism and this was the reason for his preferring to spend a portion of his time at Wolf Island, Missouri; the climate there agreed better with him.

"His well-tried spirit quit its earthly tabernacle on January 1, 1893, and was put to rest in the Arcadia Valley Masonic Cemetery. His moral traits of character were indicated very clearly in the words of one of his daughters in a letter:

'He was a member of the Baptist Church but was charitable to all denominations, believed in being a Christian above all things. He labored to instill into the minds of his children to do to others as they would be done by, and return good for evil in all cases. During his life he never let his children hear him speak evil of anyone; it was a thing he would not tolerate in them.'"
